The Fort Exchange
The First Old Las Vegas Fort Flag
You can own a replica of the first flag flown at The Old Fort in 1855. This flag was commissioned by the President of the Las Vegas Mission, William Bringhurst, to be flown over the fort to celebrate Independence Day on what was the first Independence Day celebrated in Las Vegas.
This unique flag is specific to The Old Fort and not flown anywhere else. Its styling represents both the United States and the background of the settlers of the time.
In his journal, John Steele wrote the following about making and flying that first flag…
The president then appointed me to get up a flag, stars and stripes, to hoist at the mast head. He also gave me 1-½ yards of domestic and Sidney Carter gave me an old red shirt; accordingly I went to work and with the assistance of Brother Hulett and Brother Foster, I made the flag. Brother Foster gave me a piece of blue jeans, which served for the corner piece and we cut out 18 stars, 9 on a side, with a large eight-point star in the center representing Deseret.
The settlers applied for statehood in 1849 under the name Deseret, a word in the language of the Jaredites from the Book of Mormon meaning “honeybee” and signifying industriousness. But the petition was rejected by the U.S. Congress because of the vast size of the relatively unpopulated area. Instead, the federal government created the Utah Territory and, in 1896, the Utah Territory gained statehood as Utah.
