Saturday February 4th,  2017  – Dutch Oven Cooking Demonstration:

dutch oven cookingWe are continuing the pioneer tradition of Dutch oven cooking at the Old Fort, with often very tasty results.  Come watch park staff cook up some delectable dishes the old fashioned way and then sample things for yourself!.

WHEN: Saturday, February 4th, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

COST: Admission is just $1.00 per person for ages 13 and over, kids 12 and under are free!

 
Saturday February 11th, 2017 – Fort Tours: 

Take a guided walk-through of the birthplace of Las Vegas with someone who works there.  This ranger-led tour covers the timeline of settlement on the site and includes a discussion of historical visuals, artifacts, and natural resources.

Saturday, February 18th, 2017  – Old Fort Winter Campfire:

Embrace the winter season with a cozy campfire in a historical setting!  This is a great opportunity to enjoy complimentary hot beverages and campfire food while casually discussing the site’s history with a ranger.

Saturday, February 25th, 2017  – History Talk: The Native American Story, Part Two :

Continuing on last month’s talk about the experience of Native Americans both before and during Mormon settlement, this ranger-led talk will focus on the relationship between natives and non-natives during the site’s ranching era.  We will explore the important role that local Paiutes played at the “Los Vegas Rancho”, their sometimes complicated relationship with ranch owner O.D. Gass, and how Helen J. Stewart contributed to the establishment of the Las Vegas Indian Colony.  .  

WHEN: Saturday, February 25th, 11:00 a.m.

Saturday, March 4th, 2017  – Dutch Oven Ranger Battle:

In order to get everyone ready for the Old Fort Dutch Oven Cook-Off on March 18th, the Old Fort is co-sponsoring a Dutch oven cooking competition with another one of Nevada’s premier state parks.  Join us AT SPRING MOUNTAIN RANCH as we teach their rangers a thing or two about cast-iron cooking and make some delectable dishes in the process.  Attendees will be able to sample three separate dish categories cooked by both Team Fort and Team Ranch and vote for their favorites..

Saturday, March 11th, 2017  – History Talk: The Old Spanish Trail/Mormon Road :

Fort Settlement Day

This talk will focus on the first trade route through Las Vegas: the notoriously treacherous Old Spanish Trail.  Join us for a diverse and exciting narrative that discusses Spanish padres, New Mexican trade caravans, mountain men, slave traders, horse thieves, and Mormon pioneers.  We will also discuss how the course and character of the trail changed over time and lay the context for the Mormon settlement of Las Vegas.

WHEN: Saturday, March 11th, 11:00 a.m.

Saturday, March 18th, 2017  – Old Fort Dutch Oven Cook-Off:

Join us for what will be one of our biggest events of the year, the fourth annual Dutch Oven Cook-Off.  This is a great opportunity to eat some great food in a historical setting while watching the some Dutch oven masters show off their cast-iron cooking skills.  Come witness the limitless versatility of the pioneer-era cook-ware, enjoy live music, sample diverse dishes, and vote for the winners!  The park opens at 8:00am and the public tasting begins at 12:30pm..

Saturday, March 25th, 2017  – Painting Unveiling:

The Old Fort is excited to announce the unveiling of a new piece of artwork for permanent display in our museum.  This 5’x 2’ painting depicts the fort as it looked in 1857 and was purchased with generous contributions from the Las Vegas Centennial Commission and the Friends of the Fort.  Come for the official unveiling of this grand painting and take some time to meet the artist, Bradley Giles.
